Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. Buying at ₹80 and selling at ₹100 gives ₹20 profit: a 20% margin but a 25% markup.

How do I set a price for a target margin?

Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). For a 25% margin on a ₹75 cost: 75 ÷ 0.75 = ₹100. A common mistake is adding 25% to cost (₹93.75), which gives only a 20% margin.

Should I include GST when calculating margin?

If you are GST-registered and claim input tax credit, no. GST passes through, so work on prices without GST. Tick “My prices include GST” if the numbers you have include it, and the calculator removes it first.

How does a discount affect my margin?

More than it looks. On a 25% margin, a 10% discount removes 40% of your profit. In Discount mode, enter your cost to see the margin left after the discount.
